Four people were taken to area hospitals by ambulance after a crash involving at least four vehicles late Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 435 in Johnson County.
At 3:46 p.m., Overland Park police, firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 435 at the Lamar Avenue overpass.
Recorded radio traffic from arriving firefighters reported a four-vehicle crash blocking the two right lanes of the highway.
Three children, all under the age of 5, and one adult were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
One ambulance took two children to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, with their uninjured mother riding along.
A second ambulance transported another child and his mother to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
Radio traffic indicates that all three children were in their required safety seats at the time of the crash.
The crash forced the closure of the three right lanes, causing traffic to quickly stack up approximately three and a half miles back to Quivira Road.
Tow trucks removed at least two of the crashed vehicles, and all lanes reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
No other details were immediately available.
