Two teenagers were injured in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Johnson County early Saturday afternoon.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, the crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-35 about a half-mile north of Santa Fe Street in Olathe at 12:50 p.m.
Troopers say a 2016 Honda Accord was in the left lane when the driver, a 19-year-old Tonganoxie man, saw traffic stopped ahead.
The Accord’s driver changed lanes to the right and sideswiped a 2026 Kia Sportage already in the lane.
The impact caused the Accord to spin and hit a 2021 Chevrolet Equinox that was stopped in traffic.
Recorded radio traffic from arriving Olathe firefighters reported heavy damage to one vehicle and moderate damage to the other two. Several people were out of the vehicles and walking around when firefighters arrived.
Two Johnson County Med-Act ambulances responded to the scene for the Accord’s driver and passenger.
The passenger in the Accord, a 15-year-old girl, was transported in critical condition to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
The driver was transported to Overland Park Regional with non-life-threatening injuries.
Radio traffic stated that the driver and passenger are brother and sister.
Troopers say the adult passenger in the Sportage was treated on scene for minor injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
According to the crash log, everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.
Olathe Police directed traffic to the far-right lane while troopers investigated the crash. The closure of multiple lanes caused traffic to back up just over two miles, back to 119th Street.
All lanes reopened at 2:10 p.m.
