Olathe man arrested in connection to deadly Lawrence shooting

Detectives arrested a 23-year-old Olathe man in Douglas County on a pending murder charge for his alleged role in a Lawrence homicide.

An Olathe man has been arrested for his alleged role in a Lawrence homicide.

According to the Lawrence Police Department, detectives arrested 23-year-old Daileon Maurice Thomas. He was booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility on a pending charge of first-degree murder on Monday evening.

The arrest follows the shooting death of 23-year-old Victor Gabriel Moreno of Lawrence just after 3 a.m. Sunday morning in downtown Lawrence.

Police say they responded to reports of gunshots heard in the 700 block of New Hampshire Street, where they found Moreno injured. He died at the scene.

“Investigators initially used public video, private video, license plate readers, and witness accounts to understand the sequence of events,” the release said. “We have no reason to believe the suspect and the victim knew each other prior to the night of the tragic events.”

Police say they also recovered a gun they believe was used in the killing of Moreno.

Douglas County jail logs show Thomas is held in custody without bond as he awaits his first court appearance.
