A Post reporter saw the driver of the vehicle remain at the scene, speaking with police as officers closed westbound 87th Street for the investigation.

Lenexa Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after a man on a bicycle was hit by a car early Wednesday morning. The driver remained at the scene.

The police department’s online calls-for-service log shows officers were sent to the area of 87th Street and Quivira Road at 1:03 a.m. for an injury accident.

Lenexa firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were dispatched to 87th Street over I-35.

At the scene, a Post reporter saw a bicycle with a damaged rear wheel lying in the westbound lanes of 87th. The car, with front bumper damage, was stopped on the right shoulder of the ramp to northbound I-35.

The bicycle had a flashing white headlight. It’s unknown whether the bicycle had a rear light.

Paramedics transported the critically injured bicyclist, identified in radio traffic as a man in his 40s, to an area hospital with serious injuries. It is not currently known if he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the car remained on scene and could be seen talking to police near the bicycle.

Police closed the westbound lanes of 87th Street, diverting traffic to both directions of I-35, as they investigated the crash.

No other details were immediately available.
