A recommendation to close Westwood View Elementary is not moving forward, Shawnee Mission School Superintendent Gene Johnson said after Monday’s board meeting.
A strategic planning committee meeting earlier this year made several recommendations for facilities upgrades and closures. Among the schools targeted for closure by the report were Westwood View located off Rainbow on 50th Street in Westwood..
“There is no reason to move forward at this time,” Johnson said of the Westwood View recommendation. The portions of the report regarding upgrades to facilities is being evaluated for action, but not the portion involving any closings.
Westwood View has been on every cut list since the 1970s, Board Member Donna Bysfield said. But there is “nothing” going on now with it.
The committee, made up of administrators, teachers, principals, parents, students and staff recommended that Westwood View be merged with Highlands Elementary. Westwood View is one of the district’s smallest schools and Highlands has unfilled classrooms since its reconstruction was completed two years ago.
