The holiday season also marks a milestone for Melissa Wassergord.
Her Olathe boutique, Maxi Laine’s, officially opened its doors in 2023 on Black Friday — the annual kickoff of the bustling holiday shopping season. This year marks the shop’s second anniversary at its original location on 135th Street.
This holiday season is a bit different though, because another milestone is on its way in a couple of months; a brand new storefront in the making.
In early 2026, Maxi Laine’s will open a second location in downtown Olathe.
Maxi Laine’s is coming to 108 W. Cedar St.
- The boutique is coming to a space just off Cedar and Cherry streets in downtown Olathe, near the Junque Drawer Boutique.
- Three T Baker’s previously occupied that space, before moving elsewhere in Olathe.
- Once Maxi Laine’s opens in its new downtown spot, it will initially operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday — likely with the same regular hours as Junque Drawer.
Maxi Laine’s specializes in custom Kansas City-themed apparel

The boutique is known, in large part, for its Kansas City-themed clothes and accessories.
The shop offers a wide range of apparel adorned with Chiefs and Royals logos, as well as attire sporting local college teams like the University of Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas State University Wildcats.
Apparel items include shirts, sweatshirts and hats as well as embroidered patches.
“All these patches are designed right here in-house, and all of our Chiefs gear, Royals gear, and all of our collegiate stuff is also all designed in-house,” Wassergord said. “It’s done in small batches, so we don’t mass produce, which keeps it unique.”
In addition to the shop’s sports collection, Maxi Laine’s also carries women’s boutique clothing — items like skirts, dresses, jeans, jumpsuits and accessories.
The name of the boutique has a familial tie for Wassergord. Her grandmother’s first name is Maxine, and Laine is her middle name (as well as Wassergord’s).
This marks Maxi Laine’s second storefront
Maxi Laine’s initially got its start as a home project for Wassergord.
She began making custom shirts and accessories in her basement more than a decade ago, adding more clothing items as the venture grew. Eventually, Maxi Laine’s began making appearances at pop-up events before opening its first storefront in 2023.
Initially, Wassergord said the flagship store at 14010 W. 135th St. will remain open — at least until its lease ends in November 2026.
The boutique will come as the latest in several new additions to Olathe’s growing downtown, which means more neighbors for Maxi Laine’s than what the store has in its current spot. By bringing Maxi Laine’s downtown, she said she’s looking forward to that part the most.
“Everybody’s so welcoming that I’ve talked to down there,” she said. “That’s what I’m probably most excited about. It’s just more neighbors, more community.”
