William “Bill” Dean Cowan, 70, passed away peacefully in Overland Park, KS on Sunday, August 30, 2026. He was born on June 17, 1956 and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. Bill was a proud 1974 graduate of Washington High School. A dedicated patriot, Bill served his country with honor as a veteran of the United States Army from 1982 to 1992, Throughout his decade of military service, he was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Hood, Texas. His service also took him overseas to Turkey before he ultimately concluded his army career at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.
Following his honorable discharge from the military, Bill returned home to Kansas and settled in Overland Park. He brought his dedication and leadership to the local community, working several years as a manager for Topsy’s Popcorn. Bill also had a lifelong passion for bowling. He was an incredibly talented bowler who achieved the rare feat of rolling multiple perfect 300 games. His love for the sport ran so deep that he shared his enthusiasm with others by serving as an assistant manager at the former King Louie West Bowling Center in Overland Park for a number of years.
Known for his immense warmth, Bill always had a smile on his face and possessed the rare gift of making friends very easily wherever life took him. He had a deeply generous spirit and would help out anyone with anything at any time if he was able. Bill was also a man who was never in a hurry to do anything; he famously had just one speed, and that was slow. Yet, in his own time and steady way, he almost always got everything accomplished that he wanted to accomplish. Above all, Bill cherished his family; he loved attending his nieces’ and nephews’ school sporting events, rarely missing a chance to watch them play baseball or whatever other activities they were into year-round.
After serving in Hawaii, he always wanted to get back there, but unfortunately, he was never able to return there. But now, he is free to fly high in paradise. Bill was so loved by his entire family; he will be forever missed but will always be in our hearts! We love you, Bill. Fly High!
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Calvin S. and Martha E. Cowan; a sister, Cheryl Ann Cowan; brother in-law, Jolyne Brosius, Sr; two sisters in-law, Sharon and Sheila Cowan; and great-nephew, Vincent Brosius. Bill is survived by one sister, Debra Brosius of Kansas City, Missouri; his five brothers, Gary Cowan of Lenexa, Kansas; Ken Cowan (Patty) of Tonganoxie,
Kansas; Rick Cowan (Christina) of Cross Timbers, Missouri; Chris Cowan of Independence, Missouri; and Scott Cowan of Mission, Kansas; numerous beloved nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and close friends.
Services will be held at the Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, Kansas. The date and time are pending and will be updated accordingly.
