December 17, 1963 – October 23, 2026
John David Messina, 62, of Gardner, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2026, at the University of Kansas Hospice House in Olathe, Kansas.
Born on December 17, 1963, in Kansas City, Missouri, John was the son of David Harley Messina and the late Nancy Ann (Flanigan) Messina. At the age of two, he moved with his family to Gardner, Kansas, where they made their home on Lake Road 10. John attended Gardner Elementary School until the family relocated to Spring Hill, Kansas, ten years later.
From an early age, John demonstrated a natural talent and enthusiasm for sports, particularly baseball. An outstanding pitcher for the Gardner baseball team, he was honored in 1977 as a Babe Ruth Athlete of the Year, recognizing his exceptional athletic ability, sportsmanship, and contributions to his team.
John attended high school in West Bloomfield, Michigan, before graduating from Shenandoah High School in Clifton Park, New York. He continued his education at William Paterson University in New Jersey.
John built a successful career in the hospitality industry, managing Frankie’s Italian Grille and Dixie Tavern in Charlotte, North Carolina, before joining T&B Concepts. During his more than 20 years with the company, he served as a divisional manager overseeing seven Hickory Tavern restaurants throughout North Carolina. A respected leader and mentor, John took great pride in developing others, frequently leading the hiring and training of teams for new restaurant openings. His dedication, leadership, and genuine interest in the success of others earned him the respect and friendship of countless colleagues throughout his career.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John’s greatest legacy may well be the friendships he cultivated and the kindness he extended to others. A devoted son, he lovingly cared for his mother, Nancy, until her passing. John had a remarkable gift for friendship and a way of making everyone feel welcome. His home on the lake became a gathering place for neighbors and friends, where his porch was often filled with music, laughter, lively conversation, and the simple joy of being together. He was a trusted confidant, a source of encouragement, and the kind of friend who was always there when someone needed him.
John’s faith was an important part of his life and he approached life’s challenges with strength, courage, and dignity, never losing sight of the people he loved. To know John was to know a man who valued family, treasured friendship, and understood that some of life’s greatest blessings are found in the company of those we love.
John was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Nancy Ann Messina.
He is survived by his father, David Messina of Greenville, South Carolina; his sister, Brenda Messina Fick of Atlanta, Georgia; his brother, Christopher Messina of New Jersey; his former wife, Dr. Susan Olcott of Columbus, North Carolina; his uncle and aunt, Mike and Rita Messina; his aunt, Linda Kreutzer; and numerous cousins in the Kansas City area.
For years, a light on John’s porch was a simple invitation for friends and neighbors to gather. Though that light has gone out, the warmth, laughter, and love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
