Former Prairie Village city councilor and current state Rep. Kay Wolf on Monday filed as a Republican candidate for the District 7 state senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Terrie Huntington, who will not be seeking re-election.
Huntington said her decision was prompted by her mother’s health. During the last week of the legislative session, Huntington’s mother, who lives in Clearwater, Kan., was hospitalized with heart trouble. She is now in a skilled nursing facility.
“I had every intention of running,” she said. “But sometimes things happen in your life and you realize you need to redirect your energy.”
Huntington said she asked Wolf to file for the seat and is endorsing her.
“I want to make sure the district is represented well, and I know Kay has the experience to do it,” Huntington said. “She is the obvious choice. With her time on the legislature, her time with the Northeast Johnson County Chamber, her time on the Prairie Village city council — she really knows the area.”
Wolf will face David Harvey, who challenged Huntington in 2010, in the August primary. One Democrat, Roeland Park resident Kyle Russell, has filed for the seat as well, and will run unopposed in the primary.
