Two projects in Merriam will be asking for affordable housing tax credits for senior citizen apartments in the 2016 round of applications. A project in Mission also is seeking tax credits again for affordable senior housing.
One of the Merriam projects is asking for the tax credits to support the rehabilitation of Sunflower Apartments, a seven-story building at 10200 W. 62nd St. The building has 108 units restricted to low income tenants 55 and older. The planned project would add a laundry room, community room, patio and a HUD service coordinator to help with tenant needs. The building sits behind the Russel Stover off of Shawnee Mission Parkway.
The second Merriam project is looking for tax credits to build a new project on the site of the former Switzer Elementary School in west Merriam. The now vacant lot of more than five acres is at 7101 Switzer.
Cornerstone Associates is proposing to build a two-story building with 42 age restricted units. They will be restricted to middle to low income households ages 55 and up. Cornerstone operates a number of tax credit projects throughout the Midwest.
The Merriam City Council passed resolutions of support for the projects that will be submitted with the tax credit applications. The tax credits are competitive and not all projects are awarded the credits. The housing tax credits are a federal program administered through the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation.
