Coronavirus concerns prompt cancellation of 54th annual Old Shawnee Days

Thus far, the coronavirus pandemic has been the cause for meeting, event and even in-person schooling cancelations through May 2020. Now, it’s inching into June.

The organizers of the 54th annual Old Shawnee Days announced today that this year’s event, which was scheduled for June 4-7, has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns. The Old Shawnee Days Society, the city of Shawnee and the Johnson County Emergency Management staff worked together to come to the conclusion to cancel the event.

Amid a global pandemic, the unprecedented situation called for the decision to be made “in the best interest of the community,” the announcement reads. Additionally, the society’s top priority remains the health and safety of all involved, including committee members, city staff, vendors and the community at large.

“This is an event our entire community looks forward to every year, and we start planning months in advance,” the announcement reads. “We all take so much pride and enjoyment over those four days when we see so many families together enjoying our community.”

Old Shawnee Days 2021 is scheduled for June 3 to June 6.
