Pedego Electric Bikes opens first Overland Park location at Deer Creek Marketplace

Pedego Electric Bikes, a California-based electric bike retailer, opened its first Johnson County location in late June at the Deer Creek Marketplace in Overland Park.

Where exactly: Located at 6788 W. 135th St., the new bike store replaced the former Deer Creek Animal Hospital in the shopping center.

Products: As an e-bike retailer, the store offers 16 models of bikes for purchase, rental bikes, mechanic service and an assortment of accessories for all types of Pedego e-bike users to buy.

  • Out of the three levels of e-bikes, Pedego sells only Level 2 electric bikes, whose throttle and assist can propel the bike up to 20 mph, which makes them legal to ride on all pedestrian trails.
  • Pedego’s models include cruisers, mountain bikes, cargo bikes and electric folding bikes among other bikes.
  • Each bike also comes with a 5-year warranty, which includes anti-theft protection and a lifetime frame warranty.

Owners: The new Pedego location is independently owned and operated by couples David and Georgia James and Jody and Tal Vanarsdale.

  • When looking for a location for their new venture, David James said Overland Park was a natural choice due to the city’s abundance of parks, trails and bike lanes.
  • “Overland Park has been progressive in adding biking infrastructure to both its parks and roadways for years, which makes locating here ideal,” he said.
  • In 2015, Overland Park created a bicycle master plan, which is a comprehensive, long-term plan to improve its biking infrastructure for years to come.

Background: Headquartered in Orange County, California, the first Pedego Eletcric Bikes opened in the Kansas City metro area in 2008.

  • Now, the e-bike chain has expanded to more than 215 locally-owned brick and mortar stores across the country.
  • Pedego first came to the Kansas City metro in 2020 when another local owner, Dan Cain, opened a location off of Broadway Street in Kansas City, Missouri.

Key quote: “Pedego is about so much more than selling electric bikes,” James said. ” E-biking is a fun, recreational activity that also serves as an efficient mode of local transportation. We are so excited to help the citizens of Johnson County save on gas while contributing to the metro’s sustainability efforts.”
