Prairiefire grocery store ‘coming soon’ — Will it be Amazon Fresh?

Construction is well underway on a new 43,000-square foot grocery at Overland Park’s Prairiefire.

But who exactly will occupy the space once it’s complete remains a public mystery, though it has been speculated for years that the property will be home to the Kansas City area’s first Amazon Fresh market.

The grocery store will be on the west side of Prairiefire

  • The grocery will occupy a space off 137th Street, on the western side of the pedestrian shopping center at Prairiefire.
  • The store will neighbor Chicken N Pickle and HomeGoods at the mixed-use development.
  • It will take up roughly 3 acres on the site.

The store’s occupant has not been announced

  • The Prairiefire website lists the new development as a “grocery market” but no official opening date nor regular hours are yet posted.
  • When plans were first announced for the grocery in 2021, some of the project’s design elements led some to suggest it could be an Amazon Fresh market.
  • The image Prairiefire’s website uses to tout the store as “coming soon” appears to use an image from an Amazon Fresh store in New Jersey.

An Illinois-based company is behind the development

  • Kensington Partners, an Illinois-based company, designed the site plan for the new store but what exact grocery it will be has not been publicly announced.
  • In 2021, the city of Overland Park initially approved a $4.3 million commercial building permit for the store.
  • The Prairiefire grocery store project is Kensington’s first foray into Kansas.
  • The company also owns and operates several grocery stores and other retailers across the country, including Walgreens, Sam’s Club and Home Depot stores.
