Leawood commission paves way for new senior living facility

MorningStar Senior Living, a company offering “premier communities” for seniors, is closer to bringing a new residential and memory care facility to Johnson County.

At its meeting this week, the Leawood Planning Commission unanimously approved preliminary plans for a new MorningStar senior living facility near 137th St. and Nall Ave.

The item heads next to the Leawood City Council, which will review the plan at a future meeting.

The company wants to build a two-story, 106,000-square-foot facility

  • The facility would accommodate 100 residents and would take up roughly four acres of land.
  • The building would occupy the northeast corner of 137th and Nall.
  • It would operate at the Cornerstone of Leawood development, near a new planned Warners’ Stellian appliance store.

MorningStar offers independent and assisted living and memory care

  • This particular facility’s plan calls for 75 assisted living units and 25 memory care units.
  • Brandon Lesniak, chief investment officer for MorningStar, told the commission that they try to cater each facility’s design to the style of its existing surroundings.
  • “No two buildings are alike,” Lesniak said. “We try to have our community be more representative of (its surrounding) area locally with materiality and design.”

This would be the first MorningStar community in JoCo

  • The Colorado-based company operates facilities in a number of states across the country, including Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and Iowa.
  • At Tuesday’s meeting, Leawood Planning Commission Chairman Marc Elkins pointed out a growing demand in Leawood for senior housing.
  • “It’s a need that we’ve had in Leawood and that I think we’re continuing to have,” he said.
