This Mission Mexican restaurant closes after three-year run

The Corner Lalo’s Kitchen, an authentic Mexican restaurant in Mission, is now permanently closed.

Everardo “Lalo” Alvarez opened the restaurant in a strip mall at 5038 Lamar Avenue, in December 2019 — just a few months before COVID-19 hit Johnson County in March 2020.

Alvarez announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page that Feb. 24 was The Corner Lalo’s Kitchen’s last day in business.

Alvarez says he’s grateful to the community

  • In a roughly five-minute video posted to Facebook Live on Feb. 25, Alvarez thanked his supporters for the last three years of business, though he did not mention specific reasons why it closed.
  • He also said he does not know what he is going to do next, but he hopes customers enjoyed his food.
  • “It’s hard to say goodbye, but we got a good experience,” Alvarez said. “I’m so happy because these three years were amazing for us, for me and my family.”

He dreamed of owning his own restaurant

  • Alvarez, who did not respond to a request for comment for this story, previously told the Post he’s been passionate about cooking since he was 13 years old.
  • He brought more than 24 years of culinary experience to The Corner Lalo’s Kitchen, including managing a large Italian restaurant, according to what he previously told the Post.
  • At the time the restaurant opened, Alvarez said he had aspirations to open a second location.

Alvarez said another business is taking over

  • In his Facebook Live video, Alvarez mentioned that he was cleaning the restaurant space in order to make way for the next owners.
  • “We just come today to clean the restaurant, because somebody is gonna take over pretty soon,” Alvarez said, though he did not say what is taking over the storefront.
  • Below is the Facebook Live announcement Alvarez made on Feb. 25.
