Prairie Village eyes 7 major roads for CARS funding for next five years

Seven major Prairie Village corridors are on the list for County Assistance Road System funding in the next five years.

The Prairie Village City Council last week unanimously approved the 2024 to 2028 CARS program, an approval that outlines which major roads are up next for significant improvements and for which the city will request county dollars to financially support.

The approval only commits PV to the 2024 projects

  • The first 2024 project on the list is Mission Road between 63rd and 67th streets — just north of the 2023 CARS project on Mission Road.
  • This is a $517,000 project with Mission Hills, and the city is requesting $258,000 in CARS funding, according to city documents.
  • The second 2024 project is for Nall Avenue between 75th and 79th streets — a $1.3 million project for which the city is asking $667,500 in CARS funding.
  • The final project is Roe Avenue from northern city limits to 63rd Street, but the city of Mission is administering this project and Prairie Village is not using its own CARS funding, according to city documents.

Four other major thoroughfares are on the five-year list

  • In 2025, the city is eyeballing 75th Street between State Line and Mission roads and 63rd Street between Roe and Nall avenues.
  • Roe Avenue between 63rd and 83rd streets is the only project on the list for 2026.
  • In 2027, Prairie Village hopes to work on 83rd Street from city limits to Nall Avenue, and Nall Avenue from 63rd to 67th streets.
  • Finally, 75th Street between Mission Road and Nall Avenue is on the docket for 2028 CARS funding.

CARS works with cities to pay 50% of project costs

  • This program, created in 1983, aims to maintain Johnson County’s major arterial roads — like Mission Road, Roe Avenue and 75th Street in Prairie Village.
  • Residential streets are ineligible for the program, according to the Johnson County CARS website.
  • Cities like Prairie Village submit a five-year CARS plan to the county annually, according to the website.
