3 Overland Park hospitals get ‘A’ for safety in new ratings

Three Overland Park hospitals are some of the safest in the country, according to new rankings.

Saint Luke’s South, Menorah Medical Center and Overland Park Regional Regional Medical Center each earned “A” grades for safety in new ratings put out by The Leapfrog Group, a national medical watchdog group.

Leapfrog Group rankings come twice a year

  • Each spring and fall, the Leapfrog Group gives hospitals across the U.S. letter grades for safety and transparency.
  • The group uses its scores to determine a hospital’s ability to prevent medical errors or other harm to patients under their care.
  • The grading system ranges from “A” to “F,” are based on performance metrics like responsiveness of hospital staff, what technology hospitals use to prevent errors and how often hospital staff make procedural mistakes.

Two of these OP hospitals have earned A’s before

  • Last fall, both Menorah and Overland Park Regional Medical Center earned “A’s” from Leapfrog.
  • These latest grades mark the sixth and seventh times, respectively, that those two hospitals have earned Leapfrog’s top mark.
  • Outside of Overland Park, the only other Johnson County facility to earn an “A” grade this spring was AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in Merriam — marking the hospital’s 20th consecutive “A” rating from Leapfrog.

About 30% of Kansas hospitals got a perfect score

  • Overall, the state of Kansas currently ranks 20th in Leapfrog’s state rankings when it comes to hospital safety.
  • The University of Kansas Hospital and Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., earned “B” grades this spring.
  • Olathe Medical Center in Olathe earned a “C.”
