It’s the Fourth of July weekend, Johnson County.
Independence Day may fall on a Tuesday this year, but there are a number of events to kick off this weekend and even Monday to celebrate the holiday.
As a reminder, fireworks are prohibited in most Johnson County cities — but more information on what is allowed in which cities can be found here.
Attend a Fourth of July parade
- Paw-triotic Pet Parade — The city of Lenexa is hosting a pet-friendly dog parade featuring pop-up vendors at the Lenexa Public Market. The event is free and starts at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1.
- Community Days Parade — Another Lenexa event, this parade is an annual tradition running through Old Town Lenexa. It kicks off at Santa Fe Trail Drive and Park Street 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 4.
There are several family-friendly Fourth of July events
- Picnic before the Fireworks — Head to Shawnee Indian Mission for an old-fashioned picnic before a fireworks display at Bishop Miege on Monday, July 3. The picnic is between 6 and 8 p.m., and reservations can be made here (required by Friday, June 30).
- VillageFest 2023 — Prairie Village’s 27th annual Fourth of July celebration begins with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and continue on with live music, crafts, bounce houses and more until 1 p.m. The event is Tuesday, July 4 at 7700 Mission Road and at Harmon Park.
- Celebrating the Fourth at the Farm — Old-fashioned games, a bike parade and a pig calling contest are happening at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead in Overland Park from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 4.
- Lenexa Freedom Run — Run either a 5K or a 10K with the city of Lenexa on the Fourth of July. This event starts at 7 a.m. at Santa Fe Trail Drive and Pflumm Road, and registration can be completed online here.

- PARKED — The annual Shawnee Fourth of July celebration features fireworks, bounce houses, vendors and more at Stump Park, 4751 Woodland Drive, starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 30. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.
- Northeast Johnson County July 3rd Fireworks Show — Held annually at Bishop Miege High, the 2023 NEJC Fireworks show will begin at 9:45 p.m. Monday, July 3. The cities of Roeland Park, Westwood and Fairway put on this event.
- Star Spangled Spectacular — An annual fireworks display at Corporate Woods Founders’ Park, 9711 W. 109th St., kicks off at 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 4, in Overland Park. Food trucks and concerts start at 5 p.m.
