Today, we’re publishing candidates’ responses to the following question:
Kansas voters in 2022 rejected the “Value Them Both” amendment that, if enacted, would have declared that the state constitution does not include a right to abortion. In the two legislative sessions since, lawmakers have tried to pass new restrictions on abortion, some of which have been blocked by judicial rulings. Are you satisfied with the current laws and restrictions on abortion in Kansas? Do you think access should be expanded in any way? Do you support new restrictions on abortion? And if so, what kind?
Below are the answers the Post received from candidates on the issue:
District 8
Pam Shernuk (Democratic)
I strongly believe that our current laws in Kansas regarding reproductive healthcare, including abortion, should be protected. Women should have the freedom to make personal healthcare decisions without government interference. The Kansas Supreme Court has upheld that the right to bodily autonomy is fundamental, and I agree with that ruling.
My opponent voted to put the anti-abortion constitutional amendment on the ballot in August 2022, with no exception for the life of the mother, rape or incest. You can verify his voting record at www.kslegislature.gov. Voters overwhelmingly rejected that proposed amendment, sending a clear message that Kansans value the right to choose.
Even though extremist Republican legislators acknowledge “the people have spoken on this issue,” they continue to advocate for legislation that diminishes a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions. During the 2024 legislative session, there were more than 20 bills introduced that would have limited women’s reproductive freedom. Legislators have no right inserting themselves between a woman and her doctor. This matter is settled in Kansas and we need to be done with it.
If elected, I will oppose any new restrictions on abortion. Instead, I will work to ensure that access to reproductive healthcare including contraception, abortion and fertility treatments like IVF, is protected.
Chris Croft (Republican, incumbent)
