Fashion accessory chain Claire’s closing multiple Johnson County stores

The Illinois-based company is preparing to shutter hundreds of stores nationwide after filing for bankruptcy.

Illinois-based accessory chain Claire’s has closed one of its Johnson County storefronts, with another closure set to follow.

The company officially shuttered its Leawood store at Town Center Plaza, and another store inside a Walmart Supercenter in Olathe is expected to soon follow suit.

The closures come after the company filed for bankruptcy in August, prompting store closings across the U.S.

Claire’s had a Town Center Plaza store

  • The Leawood store occupied a space at 5207 W. 117th St., at the Town Center Plaza shopping center.
  • All merchandise had been removed from the Leawood storefront as of Tuesday.
  • The store inside the Walmart Supercenter at 13600 S. Alden St. was still open on Tuesday, but employees confirmed the impending closure there, too.
  • The employees who spoke to the Post did not give a specific closing date for the Olathe location.

Claire’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

  • The closures come as the Illinois-based company winds down operations at hundreds of stores across the country.
  • After filing for bankruptcy, the company sold its North American operations to private equity firm Ames Watson for $140 million.
  • Across the state line, Claire’s is also closing a store in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • Started in Chicago in the 1960a, Claire’s now has more than 1,300 locations in the U.S.
  • It specializes in selling accessories, including necklaces, bracelets and headphones. It’s also well-known for performing ear-piercings.

Claire’s still has one more Johnson County storefront

  • The retailer has one other Johnson County store inside Oak Park Mall in Overland Park.
  • As of August, the company’s filings listed that store as one of several that did not intend to close.
  • Employees at the Overland Park store could not be immediately reached on the phone this week.
