Lenexa father and son launch home repair franchise

The company offers a range of repair services, many of which are focused on helping older adults stay in their homes.

A father and son in Lenexa have launched a home repair business to help older adults age in place in Johnson County.

The father-and-son duo recently opened a franchise of Ohio-based TruBlue Home Service Ally, which serves 10 different cities in Johnson County.

TruBlue offers home repairs in various forms

  • The company offers a wide variety of handyman services, from deck building and door installations to drywall repairs and fence installations.
  • TruBlue also assists with routine household tasks like storage space organization, assembling furniture, painting walls, and patching holes.
  • This franchise of TruBlue serves homeowners in Lenexa, Shawnee, Overland Park, Merriam, Prairie Village, Leawood, Mission, Fairway and Mission Hills.

TruBlue also offers senior-focused services

Though the company’s services are available to all homeowners, TruBlue undertakes a range of services specifically for older homeowners.

For example, the company offers 75-point home safety assessments, where team members evaluate factors like tripping hazards, porch and deck safety, and walkways around the house.

TruBlue also helps with safety modifications like the installation of ramps and handrails, and the widening of doors.

“We are trained and focused on helping seniors who want to stay in their home but need to have accessibility and safety modifications done so they can remain comfortably in their home longer,” said Jeff Kinkade, who opened TruBlue with his son, Will Kinkade.

The TruBlue purpose is personal for the Kinkades

The Kinkades have seen some of the difficulties that older homeowners can face firsthand. After Jeff’s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, they said it became harder for his parents to navigate day-to-day upkeep of their two-story home.

“This business definitely stood out, kind of on that personal level,” Will said about TruBlue. “We wanted to be able to improve the lives and just the efficiency of people in their homes, in a way that maybe we weren’t able to help our own family at that time.”

Jeff isn’t new to this type of work, either. In 2002, he launched Overland Park-based Windura, which specializes in window and door replacements.

After selling the company in 2020, Jeff said he ultimately felt drawn back to the home improvement world a couple of years later. So far, he said, the demand for the range of services that TruBlue offers is clearly present in Johnson County.

“A standard residence has 15 or 20 things that need attention at any given time, so there is significant demand,” he said. “The response from homeowners has been very good. Our team is in formation, so we’re off to a good start.”
