De Soto school board candidates on the issues: Background and qualifications

The Post is publishing candidates' answers to our five-item questionnaire this week, before early voting begins.

Earlier this summer, the Post asked our readers what issues you wanted to hear candidates running for De Soto Board of Education to address leading up to the Nov. 4 election.

Based on that feedback, we developed a five-item questionnaire centering the issues most important to the USD 232 community.

Each day this week, we’re publishing the candidates’ responses to one question.

Today, we’re publishing candidates’ responses to the following question:

Background: Readers want to know something of your background. Briefly explain your education and employment history and how those experiences qualify you for this job. Readers also want to know if you currently have or in the past have had children go to schools in the district you seek to represent.

Below are the answers the Post received from candidates on this issue:

Lucy Rumsey DeWitt

I am a proud 2001 graduate of DeSoto High School in USD 232, where I gained an excellent education as well as a deep appreciation for the value of strong schools at the heart of a thriving community. That experience shaped both my career and my commitment to ensuring every student has the tools they need to succeed.

After high school, I earned my BA in Mass Communications from Baker University, and subsequently worked in fields that required clear communication, empathy, and organizational skills. For over five years, I served as a funeral director, guiding families through some of their most difficult moments. That role strengthened my ability to listen carefully, respect confidentiality, and make thoughtful decisions under pressure.

I am also a parent. Our daughter attends elementary school in the district. Our son, who has dyslexia and dysgraphia, attends a private school for language-based disabilities. We look forward to his return to USD 232. Experiencing education with a neurotypical child and a child with an IEP has fueled my desire to continue the excellent work that USD 232 is doing to meet students’ individual needs and provide the resources they need to excel..

What makes me qualified for this position is my background and my experience as a graduate of USD 232 and a parent with children in the district. I understand the lasting impact of a strong education, the essential role that our public schools play in supporting families and the community, and the importance of ensuring every child receives the education and support they deserve. This perspective will enable me to serve with empathy, accountability, and advocacy.

Calley Malloy (incumbent)

I’m a proud graduate of Blue Valley High School and earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where I was a member of Chi Omega. I later returned to serve as an advisor for the chapter, a role that deepened my commitment to mentorship and leadership.

Professionally, I have spent the last 15 years in the hospice and healthcare field, meeting with families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. That experience taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and clear communication. Over my professional career, I’ve also served on several healthcare advocacy boards for people with healthcare needs and disabilities, helping shape policies and initiatives that prioritize the well-being of our communities.

Public education has always held a special place in my heart. My mother was a public school teacher, and I spent much of my childhood in her classroom. Those early years gave me a deep appreciation for the value of education and the impact educators have on young lives.

Today, I’m a parent of two children in our district, a 1st grader and a 4th grader. My family will be part of USD 232 for the next decade. With a background in healthcare management, advocacy, and community engagement, I bring steady, experienced leadership to our board. I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve the last 4 years as your school board member and look forward to continuing this important work on behalf of all our students, families, and educators.

TJ Finan

I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and a Master’s in Special Education from Pittsburg State University. My professional background combines leadership, education, and community involvement. I spent ten years (seven years as a Supervisor) with the TSA under the Department of Homeland Security, where I developed strong leadership and organizational skills. Alongside that role, I managed day-to-day commercial properties.  Assisting in operations, gaining valuable experience in operational oversight and facility upgrades.

My passion for education led me to work as a paraprofessional for three years before becoming a Special Education teacher at Mill Valley High School, a position I proudly held for nine years. Currently, I work in the student services department at St. James Academy, where I lead initiatives supporting students with diverse learning needs.

As both an educator and a parent, I have a deep, personal investment in our schools. I have four children, three of whom currently attend schools in the district (Mill Creek Middle School and Mize Elementary). These experiences give me a well-rounded perspective on the needs of students, families, and staff, and I’m committed to ensuring our district continues to provide exceptional opportunities for all learners.

Brandi Jonasson (incumbent)

I attended public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade and earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Emporia State University. I have lived in Shawnee for twenty one years. I spent thirteen years at home raising our three children while actively volunteering in our school district and community. All three of my children began their educational journey in USD 232’s preschool program. Two have since graduated from Mill Valley High School, and my youngest is currently a sophomore there. My husband and I own a small business, where I serve as project manager and oversee daily operations. For the past 13 years, I have been an active volunteer in our schools and community. I’ve volunteered in classrooms, on field trips, and served on the Prairie Ridge Elementary PTO, where I was president for three years and later the fundraising chair. I’ve also supported fundraising efforts and volunteered at Monticello Trails Middle School and Mill Valley High School.

I am currently the incumbent candidate for the school board and serve as vice president. Through years of volunteering and advocacy, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside students, teachers, staff, administration, parents, and community members to support and strengthen our district.
