Popular Gardner bar and grill closed for now following kitchen fire

Investigators say the fire at the Tumbleweed Grill & Bar was contained to the kitchen, but the rest of the building suffered significant smoke damage.

A popular Gardner restaurant is closed after a kitchen fire on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters from Johnson County Fire District No. 1 and Olathe were called to the Tumbleweed Grill & Bar, 615 E. Main St., in Gardner, at 4:07 p.m.

Captain Matt Gillotti, public information officer for Fire District No. 1, said firefighters responded to a reported kitchen fire.

Employees had evacuated all customers from the building before fire crews arrived.

Gillotti says arriving firefighters reported smoke and fire from the smokestack on the building’s roof.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes.

Firefighters contained the fire to the kitchen area, but Gillotti said the rest of the building suffered significant smoke damage.

In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, the Tumbleweed Grill & Bar thanked the firefighters for their quick response and efforts to contain the fire.

“At this time, the extent of the damage to the building is still being assessed,” the statement reads. “What we do know is that it will be some time before we are able to reopen.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
