An Iowa-based restaurant and taproom is gearing up to officially make its Johnson County debut.
Big Grove Brewery is putting the finishing touches on its new Prairie Village brewery and eatery, with a grand opening planned for May 21.
Big Grove Brewery is opening at 7060 Mission Road
- The restaurant and brewery is opening in a newly redeveloped space on the south side of the Shops of Prairie Village, just off 71st Street and Mission Road.
- The site was previously occupied by a Macy’s department store, and Big Grove will serve as one of multiple new tenants at the site — including grocery store Hen House after it relocates from its current space at the shopping center.
- Once it opens, Big Grove Brewery’s regular hours in Prairie Village will be 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
Big Grove Brewery serves craft beer and craft cuisine
Big Grove serves, as the restaurant’s team puts it, “ridiculously approachable” cuisine with a variety of cultural influences.
That includes dishes like hot honey bao buns, tuna poke bowls, tikka masala fries, gyros and fried chicken sandwiches.
On the beer side, the Prairie Village taproom will serve roughly 20 beers on tap — which includes Big Grove’s own brews and some local ones from Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Co. and Martin City Brewing Company.
Through glass windows in the dining room, customers will be able to watch as beers are brewed on site.
The roughly 10,000-square-foot space, which underwent a full remodel, has both indoor seating and a spacious outdoor patio, which customers can access through garage bay doors. (Yes, the patio is also dog-friendly.)
Tyler Carter, Taproom Marketing Manager for Big Grove, said the goal is to partner with local businesses and community organizations to host events at the space, such as vintage markets and fitness classes.
“We want to not only be a place just to come grab a bite to eat and a drink,” he said. “We also want to host a lot of community events here, since we have such an awesome space to do that.”
This marks Big Grove’s Johnson County debut
The brewery and restaurant got its start in Iowa, where it has four locations — plus one in Omaha, Nebraska.
Carter said Prairie Village stood out as a good destination for the brand’s starting point for a variety of reasons, including its high activity.
“This area is just sprawling — and the shops of Prairie Village, they’re busy literally all the time,” he said. “(Big Grove) is just bringing something new to the area that’s already so heavily populated. The location is amazing, and everyone’s just been so welcoming.”
Depending how things go in Prairie Village, he said the hope is for Big Grove to expand its Kansas City area presence further in the next few years.
“We’ve had so much good feedback, especially with just creating a space with a large patio that’s family-friendly,” he said.
