A growing southern Overland Park development is approaching the opening of its first hotel.
After wrapping up construction, Holiday Inn Express & Suites will celebrate its grand opening at the Bluhawk development next week.
The hotel is opening at 16101 Shawnee Drive
- The hotel was built on the south side of the Bluhawk development, off Shawnee Drive.
- It’s just east of the AdventHealth Sports Park amateur sports arena, and south of the existing retail area at Bluhawk.
- The hotel will celebrate its grand opening on Thursday, May 21.
The hotel has 99 rooms and four stories
IHG Hotels & Resorts, which owns Holiday Inn Express & Suites, already has several hotels in Johnson County — including three in Overland Park.
The brand also has multiple hotels in Lenexa, Olathe and Shawnee.
“We are thrilled to bring the Holiday Inn Express brand to this innovative mixed-use development,” said Jimmy Taylor, VP of operations at IHG Hotels & Resorts, via a press release. “This property perfectly embodies our commitment to providing comfortable, convenient accommodation for today’s travelers, particularly families participating in youth sports and visitors to major Kansas City events.”
Bluhawk will eventually have more hotels
The plan is for the growing Overland Park shopping center to have three hotels on site to accommodate youth and amateur sporting events.
The complex has hosted events nearly every weekend so far this year, from youth gymnastics and e-sports to the Kansas state high school wrestling championships.
Price Brothers, Bluhawk’s Kansas City-based developers, plans to begin construction on Bluhawk’s second and third hotels once the shopping center’s next phase of retail development wraps up in spring 2027.
With the busy youth sports complex nearby and the World Cup approaching this summer, officials with Price Brothers said having multiple hotels at Bluhawk helps the development’s ability to host large-scale tournaments and events.
“The last thing visitors want is to drive all over, looking for accommodations and amenities after a long day,” said Bart Lowen, vice president of development at Price Brothers, via the release. “With convenient accommodations, guests are able to save time and enjoy all of the nearby amenities at their doorstep, whether they’re here for youth sports tournaments, world-class events like the World Cup or visiting Overland Park for business.”
