2 concepts, 2 closures — Leawood’s Park Place loses another restaurant after 8 months

LaPez Mod Mex shut down after the same owners' previous concept, Session Taco, also closed at the same location last spring.

After roughly eight months, a Mexican restaurant has closed its doors in Leawood.

Upscale Mexican eatery LaPez Mod Mex has closed at the Park Place shopping center.

LaPez Mod Mex was at 11563 Ash St.

  • The restaurant occupied a space on the west side of the Park Place shopping center, which is just off 115th Street and Nall Avenue.
  • There, it operated near Panache Chocolatier and Bamboo Penny’s at the shopping center.
  • LaPez Mod Mex opened at Park Place in September 2025.

The owners had two concepts in the Leawood space

Before LaPez Mod Mex opened, the Park Place space was previously occupied by Session Taco — a “Southern California-inspired” taco-focused concept by the same owners.

That restaurant closed in the spring of 2025, after a two-year run in Leawood.

Co-owner Adam Tilford said customers in Leawood did respond positively to the new concept; just not enough of them.

“We had good reviews and were very happy with the product and service we provided,” he said. “We just couldn’t get enough business to sustain operations any longer.”

Park Place recently had another closure

Panache Chocolatier, LaPez Mod Mex’s former neighbor at Park Place, also closed its doors in April.

The chocolate shop operated at Park Place for 13 years, after relocating from the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following her own retirement, owner Julie House said she is open to (and hopeful for) someone else to take over the brand and potentially reopen the shop, either in Leawood or elsewhere.
