A 33-year-old Olathe man has been sentenced to more than 26 years in prison for a 2024 drunk driving crash that killed a Lenexa woman and seriously injured her husband.
On Sept. 7, 2024, Vincente F. Perez was driving a blue Subaru WRX over 125 mph eastbound on College Boulevard, west of Lackman Road, when he rear-ended a Nissan Maxima.
Inside the Maxima were Susan Cameron and her husband.
Susan Cameron, 71, was a passenger in the car and was killed in the crash.
Her husband was driving the car and was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Perez, now 33, sustained minor injuries in the crash and was arrested after being treated at a hospital.
He was charged with two felonies: reckless second-degree murder and driving under the influence aggravated battery, along with two misdemeanors for transporting an open container and driving while suspended.
On April 27, the day his jury trial was scheduled to begin, Perez changed his initial not guilty plea to guilty.
On Tuesday afternoon, Johnson County District Court Judge Thomas Sutherland sentenced Perez to the maximum possible prison term, 314 months, or more than 26 years, in the custody of the Kansas Department of Corrections.
The prison term includes 20 years and six months for the charge of reckless second-degree murder and an additional more than five and a half years for aggravated battery.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Perez remains in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office at the New Century Adult Detention Center, pending transfer to a state prison.
