‘Time to put our family first’ — Smoke Town BBQ closes in Overland Park after 6 years

The barbecue place shut its doors last weekend, citing personal circumstances, just weeks after Harp Barbecue's closure further south.

A locally owned barbecue restaurant has closed in Overland Park.

After six years, Smoke Town BBQ announced last weekend that it has permanently closed its restaurant off Shawnee Mission Parkway.

Smoke Town BBQ was at 7702 Shawnee Mission Parkway

  • The restaurant occupied a space just off Robinson Street and Shawnee Mission Parkway in northern Overland Park.
  • There, it operated near Abelardo’s Mexican Fresh.
  • Before Smoke Town BBQ opened in that space, it was previously occupied by teriyaki bowl restaurant Maui Express.

The barbecue restaurant was known for sandwiches like the “smoketown throw down” (with smoked brisket, melted pepper jack or cheddar cheese, onion straws and bacon) and the “big memphis” (pulled pork with housemade coleslaw).

In a now-deleted social media post, the owners cited “personal circumstances” as the reason for the closure and thanked customers for their ongoing support.

“Owning and operating Smoke Town BBQ has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, but it has also required countless sacrifices,” the post read. “While we did it because we loved serving our customers, it also meant missing family dinners, birthdays, school events, holidays, and many of life’s special moments. After much thought and reflection, we realized it was time to put our family first.”

Another barbecue restaurant recently closed in Johnson County

  • The closure of Smoke Town BBQ follows another barbecue restaurant’s closure in Overland Park, this one further south.
  • At the end of May, Harp Barbecue closed its doors roughly two years after moving to Overland Park from Raytown, Missouri.
  • Owner Tyler Harp cited numerous factors, including challenges with staff retention and rising costs of beef.
