The Kansas Highway Patrol says a woman was killed and two children were injured in a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 69 on Wednesday evening in Overland Park.
Troopers say at approximately 6:34 p.m., a 2021 Honda Accord and a 2008 Honda Accord were both being driven northbound on U.S. 69 approaching 159th Street when the driver of the 2021 Accord “made an abrupt stop.”
The driver of the 2008 Accord swerved left and lost control, hitting the other Accord and then rolling into the grassy median.
Arriving Overland Park firefighters reported one car in the median on its wheels with heavy damage and another car on the right shoulder with damage.
Five Johnson County Med-Act ambulances responded to the scene, with four of them transporting injured people to area hospitals.
According to the online crash log, a 40-year-old Kansas City, Missouri, man was driving the 2008 Accord when it rolled. He was wearing a seat belt according to the crash log.
Passengers in his car included a 24-year-old Raytown, Missouri, woman and her two children, a two-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl.
Troopers say the woman and children were not wearing any safety restraints when the crash happened.
Recorded radio traffic states that the woman and 3-year-old girl were both thrown from the car as it rolled over. The 2-year-old boy remained inside the car.
Johnson County Med-Act ambulances transported both adults to Overland Park Regional Medical Center and both children to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
Troopers say 24-year-old Faith Monae Lockett died at the hospital.
Lockett’s 3-year-old daughter is being treated for a “suspected serious injury,” and her son for a “suspected minor injury.”
The 40-year-old man who was driving is being treated for a “suspected minor injury,” according to the crash log.
Troopers say there were two adults in the 2021 Honda Accord. The driver was a 26-year-old Wichita man, and the passenger was a 21-year-old woman from Manhattan. Both were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
Overland Park Police and Kansas Highway Patrol Motorist Assist directed southbound traffic onto the right shoulder to pass the scene, while northbound traffic was only using the left lane.
The crash was cleaned up, and traffic returned to normal shortly after 8 p.m.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, and no other details were immediately available.
