One person was killed, and at least four others were injured in crashes on Interstate 435 in Overland Park on Friday evening.
The first crash happened at about 8:45 p.m. at the exit from westbound I-435 to U.S. 69 Highway.
Recorded radio traffic from arriving Johnson County Med-Act paramedics reported four vehicles had sustained moderate to heavy damage in the crash.
Police reported there were as many as seven people injured, with one of them in critical condition.
Paramedics rushed one person to an area hospital, who later died from their injuries.
Overland Park Police have confirmed that the first crash involved a fatality. No identifying information about the deceased has been released.

At 8:58 p.m., as police, firefighters and paramedics were still tending to the injured in the first crash, a second crash happened as traffic backed up.
That second crash involved two vehicles on westbound I-435 near the Antioch Bridge.
In total, ambulances transported five people to local hospitals. All other injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
Police closed the two right lanes of westbound I-435 near Antioch Road, along with the exit ramp to US-69 for much of the night as they investigated the fatal crash.
No other details were immediately available.
