Your Library: Community Connections hub expands essential support

The Community Connections initiative at Johnson County Library is transforming Central Resource Library in Overland Park into a welcoming hub where residents can connect directly with organizations offering job support, mobile health care, recovery services and other essential needs — all in a place they already know and trust.

Every day, Library staff help people find resources beyond what the Library offers. Patrons ask about food assistance, housing support, employment opportunities and other services. Community Connections brings those organizations into the Library, making help easier to find and access.

“The Library is already a trusted and welcoming space,” said Branch Operations Manager Molly Wetta. “There’s less stigma attached to visiting the library, which lowers barriers to access. Bringing organizations here makes them more visible and accessible so people can discover them.”

The response has been immediate. Nearly every day, community partners meet with residents in the dedicated space. Hiring events have become so popular that patrons ask when the next one will be held. Benefit enrollment events have simplified the application process by giving visitors access to computers, printers and scanners in one location. Community meals have created opportunities for connection and belonging.

A growing network of partner organizations continues to expand support. Renewed Hope offers food assistance to individuals and families in need, while Workforce Partnership provides job search help, resume reviews and interview preparation. The Olathe Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic delivers mobile women’s healthcare services and ReStart Inc. offers addiction recovery information and support.

“Being able to have space in the Library has meant so much to our team,” said Pastor Ben Williams of Renewed Hope. “Without the Library’s help and space, there would be people we wouldn’t know about who desperately need help. It has become a home base for people looking to get back on their feet and a sense of family that so many are missing.”

As Community Connections grows, Johnson County Library hopes it will strengthen partnerships, reduce barriers and make vital resources easier for everyone to access. To learn more or explore partnership opportunities, visit jocolibrary.org.
