The Kansas Highway Patrol says a Kansas City, Kansas, man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in Olathe Monday morning.
Troopers say the crash happened at about 9:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-35 north of 159th Street.
According to the online crash log, Adam Christopher Townsend, 43, was driving a 2019 Dodge Challenger northbound when the car went off the right side of the road for an unknown reason.
Troopers say the car hit a KDOT sign and then crashed into a pillar of the Lone Elm Road bridge.
Recorded radio traffic from a responding Johnson County Med-Act ambulance reported heavy smoke as they approached the scene. The same crew reported that the vehicle was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Townsend died at the scene. Troopers say he was wearing a seat belt.
Firefighters from Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 1 and Olathe Fire responded to the scene.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Olathe Police and the Kansas Department of Transportation closed the northbound lanes of the highway at 159th Street as Troopers investigated the crash.
One lane reopened at about 11:15 a.m.
The crash was cleaned up, and all lanes reopened around noon.
No other details were immediately available.
