FedEx truck on fire slows down traffic on I-435 in Overland Park

Firefighters were called to the westbound lanes of I-435 at 5:14 p.m. and arrived to find smoke from the back of a FedEx Ground tractor-trailer.

Overland Park firefighters worked for more than two hours to extinguish a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 435 near Quivira Road on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters were called to the westbound lanes of I-435 at 5:14 p.m. and arrived to find smoke from the back of a FedEx Ground tractor-trailer.

Crews unloaded much of the trailer’s cargo in order to fully extinguish the fire.

Since there are no fire hydrants along the highway, a water tanker was brought in from a station in southern Overland Park to assist in providing more water to the scene.

The fire and subsequent response caused significant traffic delays, with the remnants of the scene not being removed until after 9 p.m.

Due to the hot weather, Johnson County Med-Act crews assisted with keeping firefighters healthy and hydrated on the highway.

No injuries were reported.
