A reckless driver may have caused a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 435 in Johnson County Thursday afternoon.
Leawood police, firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to the eastbound lanes of I-435 between Lee Boulevard and State Line Road at 1:17 p.m.
Recorded radio traffic from firefighters said three vehicles sustained damage in the crash, with two on the right shoulder and one on the left shoulder.
Paramedics transported a 19-year-old man, who was the driver of one vehicle, to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
“As part of the investigation, officers are examining whether reckless driving may have been a contributing factor,” Leawood Police Captain Jason Ahring told the Post in an emailed response to questions. “Since the crash remains under investigation, that information cannot be confirmed.”
According to radio traffic, the teen driver was reportedly “weaving in and out” of traffic on the highway when he rear-ended another vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt.
No other injuries were reported.
Because one exit lane to State Line Road and two left lanes were closed as firefighters and paramedics checked for injuries, traffic backed up nearly two and a half miles to Lamar Avenue.
All lanes reopened by 2:15 p.m.
