Multi-vehicle crash shuts down I-435 in Shawnee, 4 sent to hospital

The crash happened on I-435 between Johnson Drive and Shawnee Mission Parkway. Police said all four people taken to hospitals were in stable condition.

Local authorities are investigating what led up to a crash involving seven vehicles on Interstate 435 in Shawnee on Wednesday afternoon.

Just after 1:05 p.m., Shawnee Police and Fire, the Kansas Highway Patrol and Johnson County MED-ACT paramedics were called to northbound I-435 for a reported wreck between Johnson Drive and Shawnee Mission Park.

On Facebook, Shawnee Police said seven vehicles were involved.

Pictures posted by Shawnee PD to social media showed a dump truck on its side in the rightmost northbound lane of I-435, its load of dirt spilled on the highway.

More pictures showed a white pickup truck with its front side destroyed and airbags deployed, as well as a dark-colored SUV with its front also smashed.

Shawnee Police said on Facebook that one person needed to be extricated from a vehicle.

Four people were sent to local hospitals, all in stable condition, police said.

Shawnee Police updated the Facebook post at around 2:30 p.m. to say that northbound I-435 was back open.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
