James “Jim” Herbert Linn, born on November 22, 1925, in Jacksonville, FL to Herbert and Lucille Linn, passed away peacefully at the age of 100 on September 20, 2026, in Lenexa, KS, surrounded by his family.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Linn, and his sister Marian Van der Veen. Jim leaves behind a loving family who will continue to carry his legacy forward: his sons David (Charlotte – deceased) Linn, Donald – deceased (Candy) Linn, Chuck (Susan) Linn, and Craig (Christie) Linn; his daughter Jill (Jim) Winger; his grandchildren Rebecca (Neil) Eichholz, Michael Linn, JD (Christin) Linn, Keith (Teagan) Winger, Sam Winger (Sarah Sapenoff, fiancé), and Joe Winger; and three great-grandchildren Charles and Adelaide Eichholz and Tate Winger. He is also survived by his brother, Louis Linn, and many other cherished friends and nieces and nephews.
Jim was a dedicated and hardworking man who spent his career as a bank executive at Commerce Bancshares, eventually retiring as Vice Chairman. His commitment to his profession was matched only by his dedication to his community and family.
A passionate leader and mentor, Jim devoted much of his time to helping others. He was a cherished Boy Scout leader, guiding and supporting his sons and many other young men. As an alumnus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, he remained actively involved with the UMKC alumni association, fostering connections and supporting future generations. Jim also shared his expertise as an instructor with the Robert Morris Associates, where he influenced many budding professionals in the financial industry.
Beyond his professional and community contributions, Jim was a proud World War II veteran who served in the United States Army. His military service reflected his commitment to his country and fostered a deep respect and gratitude for those who served, which he carried throughout his life through his strong support of veterans and veterans’ charities.
Jim’s life was a testament to dedication, service, and love, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
