A motorcyclist has life-threatening injuries following a crash on Interstate 35 Sunday night in Overland Park, police say.
The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-35 just north of the Antioch bridge.
At the scene, a reporter could see a motorcycle lying on its side in the center lane of the highway.
Multiple witnesses also stopped and tried to help the injured motorcyclist until first responders arrived.
Overland Park firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics responded, along with police officers from Overland Park and Merriam.
In an emailed response to questions Monday morning, Overland Park Police spokesperson Ofc. John Lacy said, “A motorcyclist driving northbound on I-35, reportedly driving erratically according to a witness, struck another northbound vehicle. The motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.”
Lacy said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
Police and the Kansas Department of Transportation closed all lanes of northbound I-35 and diverted traffic to Antioch Road.
The driver who was involved in the crash remained on scene with police. No other injuries were reported.
On Facebook, Overland Park Police termed a “serious injury crash” and asked drivers to avoid the area.
Kansas City Scout traffic cameras showed the northbound lanes were reopened at about 2:20 a.m. Monday, with police remaining in the right lane near the crash scene.
A tow truck removed the damaged motorcycle, and all lanes reopened at 3:16 a.m.
The Overland Park Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the crash.
No other details were immediately available.
