Two Election Day polling places in Johnson County at the church where U.S. Senate candidate Adam Hamilton is pastor have been moved.
That’s to avoid having voting at what is considered Hamilton’s “place of business,” said Johnson County Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt.
The polling places are at two branches of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood and Olathe. (The church was recently rebranded as Resurrection Church and remains one of the largest United Methodist Church congregations in the U.S)
Schmidt announced the changes in a press release on Monday.
What two polling sites are changing
Both polling sites that are changing are for Election Day, Nov. 3, and are not in-person early voting sites that will be open for the roughly two weeks before Election Day.
Voters who would normally go to Resurrection’s flagship Leawood location near 135th and Roe on Election Day are being directed to vote at Congregation Beth Torah, 6100 West 127th Street in Overland Park.
Those who would have voted at Resurrection West in Olathe are redirected to Christ Community Church of the Nazarene, 21385 College Boulevard.
A release from the election office said voters affected by this change will be receiving a notification from the election office.
Hamilton-Marshall race increasingly tight
Hamilton, a Democrat, is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall in what has become a tightening race, according to polls.
An Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media Poll published on Sept. 18 showed Hamilton with a slight lead over Marshall, 45% to 43%.
Kansans have not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 96 years.
Key dates to remember
As September wraps up, several important election-related deadlines are coming up:
- Last day to register to vote – October 13
- Advance mail ballots begin to be sent out – October 14
- Advance in-person voting begins – October 17 and ends at noon on November 2.
