Leawood Police are crediting a dog with alerting an officer to help its owner, who was in need of medical attention at a residnential home last month.
Leawood PD posted edited clips of the officer’s body cam footage to social media this week, where it quickly picked up likes, shares and reactions.
“Sometimes, our four-legged friends know exactly what to do,” the post began.

The footage begins with the officer getting out of their patrol car in front of a small dog in the middle of the street. The date on the footage shows it occurred on the night of Thursday, Sept. 17.
In the video, the officer can be heard talking to the dog as it barks repeatedly. The dog can also be seen wearing a leash, “but there was no owner in sight,” Leawood PD said on its social media post.
The officer got back in their patrol car and followed the dog about a half-block to a residence.
In the edited body cam footage, the dog can be seen trotting up a driveway towards an open garage door, still barking. Another, larger dog is also seen in the footage, also wearing a leash and barking.
“Hi guys, is this where you live?” the officer can be heard saying to the dogs.
As the officer approaches the open garage door, a person’s voice can be heard coming from inside.
“Hi, are you OK?” the officer responds, before the video fades out.
It turns out the resident had been on the floor of the garage, unable to get up for more than three hours.
“Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed. The resident was treated by medical personnel and is now recovering safely at home,” Leawood PD said.
In a follow-up email in response to questions, Capt. Jason Ahring, a Leawood Police spokesperson, said the call resulted in the owner getting medical attention and they are safely at home.
“While the dogs certainly deserve the attention, we also want to recognize our officer for taking the extra time to investigate the situation,” Ahring said in his email. “That extra effort made a difference and led to a positive outcome.”
