Overland Park bar Becks Place closed after state seizes assets over $40K in unpaid taxes

The bar on 87th Street owes unpaid liquor drink excise and sales taxes, according to state revenue officials. The bar's owners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An Overland Park bar and grill is closed for now following the state’s seizure of its assets due to unpaid taxes.

On Monday, a red “Seized” notice was taped to the front door of Becks Place, which appeared closed.

The door was locked, and there was no activity inside. Calls to the restaurant were not immediately returned on Monday.

Becks Place is at 9148 W. 87th St.

  • The restaurant and bar occupies a space just off a busy stretch of 87th Street and Elmhurst Drive, to the west of downtown Overland Park and near Central Resource Library.
  • There, it operates near Torreon Mexican Restaurant.
  • Becks Place has been in business for roughly three years.

Seizure notice cites “nonpayment of taxes”

A media release from the Kansas Department of Revenue said the department, along with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, seized all of Becks Place’s assets earlier this month.

That includes all bank accounts, business inventory, any cash on site and any personal property on site.

The seizure came about due to unpaid “Liquor Drink Excise Tax” and sales tax, amounting to more than $40,000, according to the state’s announcement.

“KDOR’s policy and practice is to work with taxpayers in delinquent status to voluntarily enter into repayment agreements,” the release stated. “It is only after these efforts and multiple failed collection attempts that the Department is forced to issue a tax warrant, utilizing such actions as bank levies, till taps, and ultimately asset seizure to ensure compliance with the law.”

Though the restaurant itself appeared closed on Monday, Becks Place continued posting to its Facebook page over the weekend and even on Tuesday, with a post urging customers to order to-go online.

On a Facebook post on Saturday advertising a hoagie sandwich and waffle fries, one user commented, “How long are you going to be closed?” but the restaurant did not respond.

Another user replied with a screenshot of an AI-generated summary of Google search results saying Becks Place’s assets had been seized due to unpaid taxes.

“I am frantically looking for a gofundme anywhere to see where I can help,” the woman wrote on Facebook. “Love this place. Bob and Lisa ARE THE BEST!! Fingers crossed and ready to rally!”

Becks Place opened in 2023

Husband-and-wife owners Bob and Lisa Beck opened the bar and grill in late summer 2023.

Becks Place replaced Irish pub McGuire’s Tavern at the Overland Park site.

Becks Place offers bar eats like burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as beers, multiple TVs to catch games on, and events like poker nights.
