Teen on bicycle hospitalized after being hit by pickup truck driver in Olathe crosswalk

Olathe Police say the truck was turning right from Blackfoot Drive onto westbound 135th Street when it hit the boy, who was using the crosswalk.

The Olathe Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating after a teenager on a bicycle was hit by a man driving a pickup truck on Wednesday evening.

Major Joe Sudduth, a spokesperson for Olathe Police, told the Post that their initial investigation indicates the teen was on a bicycle, using the crosswalk to cross 135th Street from south to north, when he was hit by the truck at about 7:15 p.m.

Sudduth says the truck was making a right turn from southbound Blackfoot Drive to westbound 135th Street when the teenager was hit.

Recorded radio traffic stated that the injured teen is a 15-year-old boy.

Olathe firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics responded to the scene to find the teen underneath the pickup.

Paramedics transported him to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Sudduth said the teenager’s injuries are non-life-threatening.

The pickup truck driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

A Post reporter was on scene as the driver participated in field sobriety testing with police officers and consented to officers collecting a blood sample for toxicological analysis.

The post-crash blood sample will be used to detect and measure the concentration of any alcohol, prescription medication or illegal drugs in the driver’s system.

Police did not arrest or cite the driver at the scene; however, Sudduth said the investigation is ongoing.

Police closed the westbound lanes of 135th Street for about two and a half hours as they completed their on-scene investigation.

No other details have been released.
