JCCC is celebrating National Transfer Student Week by providing Cavaliers with all the tools needed for a successful transfer.
Transferring is on the rise as an increasing number of students recognize the value in starting at a community college and finishing their degrees at four-year universities. A report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center found 500,000 students transferred from two-year to four-year institutions in fall 2024 alone.
JCCC is ready to meet this growing need, providing easily transferable college credits at affordable tuition rates for students who want to go on to earn a bachelor’s degree.
A new system for success
Last year, the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) implemented a new Systemwide General Education framework, which makes it easier for students to transfer within Kansas’s public higher education system.
Students start with completing 34-35 required general education credit hours if they are working toward any of these JCCC degrees:
These four degrees — and general education requirements — transfer seamlessly within the KBOR system. Students can dive right into advanced courses for their chosen major or degree at either Washburn University, or the six state universities — the University of Kansas (KU), Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University, and Wichita State University.
There are a few exceptions, which are outlined on the Kansas Board of Regents’ General Education Exceptions page.
Preparing for the next step
In addition to transferrable coursework, JCCC provides on-campus opportunities to help Cavaliers transfer with confidence.
Students who have a four-year school in mind can meet with the institution’s advisor in our newly remodeled Transfer Center, located on the second floor of the Student Center. Transfer advisor appointments are held each semester, or students can contact a transfer advisor directly to set up a meeting.
JCCC also hosts transfer events throughout the year. Recently, the JCCC Financial Aid Office, Honors Program, and Counseling office teamed up for Map Your Future, a series of events designed to cross off every task on a transfer list.
October 5 was Get It Done Day, coinciding with the Kansas Apply Free Days, where Kansas residents can apply for free to any of the seven Kansas public universities.
Cavaliers stopped by to submit their transfer application and get assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).
“Whether you’re ready to apply or just exploring your options, we’re here to help,” said Haley Crawford, Financial Aid Communications Coordinator. “It’s never too early to start planning your future.”
