The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed a Shawnee man Thursday evening on Interstate 35 in Johnson County.
According to the Highway Patrol’s online crash log, it happened in the 7700 block of northbound I-35, or about four-tenths of a mile south of the 75th Street bridge.
Troopers say that at 6:35 p.m., a 1991 Honda Civic was “legally parked” on the right shoulder of northbound I-35 with hazard lights flashing.
Cameron D. Harrison, 25, was standing behind the Honda and looking in the car’s trunk when he was hit by a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek driven by a 47-year-old Bonner Springs man.
According to the crash log, the Subaru was being driven on the right shoulder prior to the crash. The log does not say how far the Subaru was driven on the shoulder before the crash.

Troopers say the impact pushed Harrison and his Honda out into the northbound lanes, while the Subaru crashed into the right ditch.
Numerous witnesses and other drivers stopped immediately after the crash to check for injuries and begin first aid.
Firefighters from Overland Park and Lenexa responded with paramedics from two Johnson County Med-Act ambulances.
Harrison was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where Troopers say he later died from his injuries.
The Subaru driver was transported to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the crash log. He was wearing a seat belt.
Northbound traffic was restricted to one lane until about 8 p.m., when the Kansas Department of Transportation arrived to help close the Interstate at 87th Street.
Traffic on I-35 was diverted to the exit ramp that leads to both 87th and 75th Streets. Northbound traffic from U.S. 69 Highway was also rerouted to the 75th Street exit.
During the closure, Overland Park officers responded to a non-injury crash on the exit ramp to 75th Street. The low-speed fender bender involved three vehicles.
Back on the highway, Troopers used survey equipment and a drone to document the crash scene while the lanes were closed.
Tow trucks removed the crashed vehicles and cleaned up debris before all lanes were reopened at 11:40 p.m.
The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate what led up to the crash.
No other details have been released.
