Fire destroys Prairie Village home’s detached garage and 2 cars inside

Investigators say the fire started near a workbench in the back corner of the garage, though they are still trying to identify an exact cause.

A Prairie Village home’s detached garage is a total loss following a fire on Thursday afternoon.

Just after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, crews from Consolidated Fire District No. 2, which covers much of northeastern Johnson County, responded to an emergency call at a home near 73rd Street and Springfield Road.

That intersection is a few blocks west of State Line Road.

When firefighters arrived, Fire Marshall Todd Kerkhoff said they were forced to fight a “defensive” fire since the garage structure and everything inside were totally consumed by flames.

On Facebook, the department termed it a “self-venting” fire, meaning it was being readily fed by oxygen from open doors and windows.

Crews, however, managed to get the garage doors off and bring the fire under control with no major injuries or damage to the single-family home on the property.

Investigators said two vehicles, a Toyota RAV4 and a Mini Cooper, were in the garage and were both destroyed.

Kerkhoff said investigators pinpointed an area in the back corner of the garage near a workbench as where the fire started, though they are still working to identify an exact cause.

The homeowner told investigators there was a space heater plugged in in that part of the garage that he believed had been turned off, but Kerkhoff said Thursday there’s no proof yet that was the cause.

He said they are ruling it an accidental fire.

Crews from Overland Park and Leawood also showed up to the scene, according to Consolidated Fire District No. 2’s Facebook page.

Personnel from Johnson County Med-Act were also on scene, though Kerkhoff said the only injury was the homeowner suffered some singed hair.
