Mexican supermarket and restaurant coming to Shawnee

A combination Mexican supermarket and restaurant is coming to a busy stretch of eastern Shawnee.

Alsuper Mexican Market is expected to open early next year at 10400 Shawnee Mission Parkway, in the Shawnee Shopping Center just west of Interstate 35.

The market will emphasize Mexican products and feature a to-go style kitchen.

Next door to it, a new restaurant dubbed El Lenador, 10336 Shawnee Mission Parkway, will also be opening, run by the same owner.

These are the newest additions to that shopping center

  • Alsuper Mexican Market, is based in Chihuahua, Mexico, and will sell Mexican products, as well as fresh meat and produce.
  • A to-go kitchen will also have ready-to-order food and a coffee bar.
  • “Grocery stores are always a catalyst and a traffic generator,” said Sheryl Vickers, the real estate agent who helped broker the deal to bring the two businesses to Shawnee.
  • El Lenador is expected to serve a variety of unique and traditional Mexican cuisine, but a full menu has not been announced.

Alsuper will occupy a 15,000-square-foot space

  • It is expected to open in March 2024, Vickers said, while El Lenador is anticipated to open next May.
  • The space the market will occupy is the now vacant but once housed a call center, according to Vickers, and is situated at the center of the strip mall.
  • The same building also currently houses a Trek bike shop and Shark’s Restaurant & Billiards.

Vacant retail spaces remain nearby

  • Adding the market and restaurant continues Vickers’s goal of bringing interesting shops and retail to the area in and around downtown Shawnee.
  • Another bring project of hers includes the ongoing effort to redevelop a building that currently houses a liquor store around the corner on Nieman Road.
  • She said she is also aiming to fill two other vacant retail spaces that remain at the Shawnee Shopping Center, together totaling more than 11,000 square feet of space.
