Fire severely damages home’s garage in south Overland Park, nobody injured

No injuries were reported in an early morning garage fire near 143rd Street and Nall Avenue.

Firefighters from Overland Park and Leawood were called to the home at 14405 Maple Street at 12:23 a.m. by the resident who reported a fire in the garage.

Jason Rhodes, the Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson, says arriving crews reported smoke showing from the garage of the two-story house, with everyone inside the home reporting to be outside safely.

“Firefighters cut open the garage door and attacked the garage fire while additional crews searched the home to be sure everyone was out and that the fire had not spread to the interior of the home,” Rhodes said in a news release. “The bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down, except for a small fire being fed by a propane tank.”

Rhodes says firefighters removed the propane tank from the garage and extinguished the remaining fire.

The fire significantly damaged the garage and an SUV parked inside.

Rhodes says the flames did not spread into the home’s living areas, adding that residents will likely be able to reoccupy the home.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
