Ex-Olathe West teacher gets probation for sexual relations with student

The former teacher, Jonathan Molina-Calderon, 35, will serve 36 months on probation in lieu of a 31-month prison sentence.

A former Olathe West teacher will spend three years on probation for having sex with a student.

On Thursday, Jonathan Molina-Calderon, 35, was sentenced to 31 months in prison at the Kansas Department of Corrections for unlawful sexual relations as a teacher with a student 16 and older, a level 5 felony. That sentence was suspended for 36 months of intensive supervised probation, including completing sex offender treatment and therapy.

The sentence was handed down by Judge Thomas Kelly Ryan.

Molina-Calderon was charged with the felony in November 2024. He pleaded no contest to the charge in July. He will have to register as a sex offender, according to court records.

Molina-Calderon had sex with a student at the school

Molina-Calderon began working for Olathe Public Schools as a substitute teacher in 2018 before being hired as a science teacher in the district in 2020, according to Kansas payroll records.

In October 2024, a child at the Sunflower House, a nonprofit organization for child victims of abuse in Shawnee, admitted that she had a relationship with Molina-Calderon in spring 2024. At some point, the two kissed.

While the two didn’t talk over the summer break, they resumed contact as the 2024-25 school year progressed, to the point where she was having lunch with him in his classroom.

As the two grew closer, they began to kiss and hug and on one occasion, had sex in his classroom in October 2024, according to court records.

Olathe police obtained surveillance footage from the school that showed the victim going to Molina-Calderon’s classroom alone during her lunch period on Oct. 3, 7, 8 and 14.

Molina-Calderon admitted to the pastor at his church that he had a sexual relationship with a student, court records stated.

The district said it took immediate action

After Olathe Public Schools was made aware of the allegations, they terminated his employment at its Nov. 7 Board of Education meeting, Erin Schulte, assistant director of communications for Olathe Public Schools, said in a previous email to the Johnson County Post.

“Upon learning of these allegations, the district took swift action to place Calderon on leave, refer the matter to local law enforcement, conduct an investigation, and make the recommendation of termination to the Board of Education,” she wrote.

In addition, Schulte said the district takes all allegations of staff misconduct seriously and wants its students and staff to feel safe.

“We will not tolerate anything that impacts the well-being or safety of our students or staff,” she said. “We have processes and procedures in place, including working closely with local law enforcement to investigate and address these situations in accordance with our board policies, state and federal laws. We are committed to ensuring that our students are educated in a safe environment.”
