Spring Hill write-in mayoral candidates on the issues: Background and qualifications

The Post is publishing candidates' answers to our five-item questionnaire this week, before early voting begins.

Earlier this summer, the Post asked our readers what issues you wanted to hear candidates running for Spring Hill mayor to address leading up to the Nov. 4 election.

Based on that feedback, we developed a five-item questionnaire centering the issues most important to Spring Hill residents.

Each day this week, we’re publishing the candidates’ responses to one question.

Today, we’re publishing candidates’ responses to the following question:

Background: Readers want to know something of your background. Briefly explain your education and employment history and how those experiences qualify you for this job.

Below are the answers the Post received from candidates on this issue:

Rodolfo Arevalo

I have over 40 years as a university educator, administrator, community advocate and retired university president. I hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance; master’s in social work administration and a PhD in educational administration. I have served in educational leadership roles for most of my professional career. As part of those professional roles, I have contributed to the local communities by being active in local, state and county government. I have done this by serving on boards, commissions and taskforces to improve services to citizens in three different states .

I current serve as Chair of the Spring Hill Planning Commission and have been on the commission for approximately six years and have attended city council meeting for the past 10 years. I have attended more city council meetings then any of the current members of the city council.

Chad Young

I grew up in Cypress, California, and spent my summers on my grandfather’s farm in Ogden, Kansas. These vastly different experiences — city life in California and small-town farm life in Kansas — gave me a firsthand understanding of both the challenges and strengths that come with growth, hard work, and community.

I studied business and accounting, coached youth sports and Special Olympics, and have worked in banking for more than 20 years. Over that time, I’ve held a variety of leadership positions, including Branch Manager, Regional Manager, and most recently, Vice President in Business Banking. In these roles, I’ve worked directly with business owners and community leaders to help them grow, invest, and succeed — experience that has strengthened my understanding of financial management, strategic planning, and leadership.

I’ve lived in Spring Hill for almost six years and within the school district for nearly twelve. I’ve been married for almost 19 years and have four children ranging from 19 to 7. As President of the Spring Hill City Council, I’ve helped lower the mill levy, improve infrastructure, and expand community events. I’m committed to leading Spring Hill’s continued growth responsibly while preserving the small-town values that make it a great place to live and raise a family.
