A 56-year-old woman was injured after being hit by an SUV that drove off a roadway in Leawood onto a multi-use trail late Wednesday afternoon.
Leawood police, firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics were called to the area of 133rd Street and Canterbury Street at 4:06 p.m.
The crash happened on the Leawood South Loop bike route, an approximately 10-foot-wide asphalt-paved trail along the north side of 133rd Street.
The injured woman and the damaged SUV were found between Canterbury Street and High Drive.
In a news release, Captain Jason Ahring says that officers spoke to witnesses and the elderly driver of the SUV, who remained at the scene.
“While the investigation is ongoing, at this time officers determined the elderly driver was traveling west on W. 133rd Street when they inadvertently drove their vehicle off the roadway and began driving west along the sidewalk path,” Ahring said in the release. “The pedestrian was walking west along the sidewalk path on the north side of the roadway when they were struck by the vehicle.”
Johnson County Med-Act paramedics transported the injured woman to an area hospital, where she is said to be in stable condition.
“The driver showed no signs of impairment at the scene,” Ahring said.
Officers closed 133rd Street between Canterbury Street and High Drive for about an hour while investigating the crash.
