U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, a Democrat from Johnson County, said she was “extremely concerned” following this weekend’s U.S. strikes in Iran.
In a statement Saturday, following a wave of attacks in Iran, carried out by the U.S. in coordination with Israel, Davids said President Trump had launched the strikes without Congressional approval.
Here is Davids’ full statement, which she also posted to X on Saturday:
“For decades, the Iranian regime has killed its own citizens, robbed them of their freedom, funded regional terrorism, and contributed to global instability. I believe in the Iranian people’s right to self-determination and am committed to Iran never developing nuclear weapon capabilities.
“That said, costly, endless wars without congressional authorization are not the answer. We cannot repeat the mistakes of our past, and I am extremely concerned about what this attack could drag us into. I am especially thinking of our servicemembers and hoping for their safety.
“The President has not been granted congressional approval for these acts of war. At the least, this administration must immediately answer to Congress on its objectives, legal justification, and plans to prevent the unnecessary death of American service members.”
The Iranian regime confirmed on Saturday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other senior leaders had been killed. Strikes had been reported in several major cities in Iran, including the capital, Tehran.
Congress this week is expected to debate measures that would require the president to get Congressional authorization for further military action against Iran.
The measures have Democratic and some Republican supporters but aren’t expected to get enough votes to overcome a presidential veto, according to the New York Times.
Other Kansas elected officials weigh in
Other elected leaders in Kansas and the Kansas City metro weighed in on Saturday, as well.
U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, a Republican, said he was “praying for the safety of our military men and women engaged in operations against Iran and who are stationed in the region.”
He also said the Trump administration “should provide full, timely briefings to Congress so that we can understand the objectives, risks and costs for continued or expanded military action.”

For years, Iran has terrorized its own people, funded terror networks, supported proxy militias that undermine regional stability, threatened…

Kansas’ other Republican senator, Roger Marshall, issued a briefer statement on X, saying, “May God Bless and keep safe the Armed Forces of the United States Military. The greatest military in the world.”

U.S. Rep. Derek Schmidt, a Republican representing the state’s 2nd Congressional District covering most of the eastern half of the state, said he expected to get more briefings about the Iran operation in the coming days.
“I will be listening carefully to the information provided,” he said, in a statement.
I expect a preliminary briefing tomorrow regarding the military operation in Iran followed by a more detailed briefing likely later this coming week. I will be listening carefully to the information provided.

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat representing Kansas City, said military action “should be a last resort” and that it was “unclear why the Administration abandoned diplomatic talks.”
“This could quickly escalate into a wider, regional conflict. Congress should reassert its authority and Article I Constitutional powers immediately,” Cleaver said.
